In the fall of 1957, long before there was ever any thought of a group of old fellows calling themselves The Crawfordsville Writers, a new freshman class converged on the Emory-at-Oxford (now Oxford College) campus. During the next two years in the secluded, dogwood-dotted environs of that small liberal arts school, we studied, competed, anguished and exalted. Not until many years later did we congeal as a group of writers....Although our brotherhood may have been spawned by college friendships, it's glue has been a love of the written word or perhaps the simple urge to express. Two of us were English majors, one studied for the ministry and three majored in the sciences, to proceeded on into medicine. Although the six of us knew each other - and everyone else on the small campus - we were never all part of the same grouping of friends.... As the new millennium in our 60th birthday salute we sensed we had better sees the decade of our 60s. From that grew the notion of this book. Some of us wanted to showcase our best work. Some wanted to focus on pieces considered important to Oxford or to our friendship. Finally we agreed the book was simply a window to ourselves to which others could peak. --- excerpts from book's Preface |
